Geerat J. Vermeij is Distinguished Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Davis. As an evolutionary biologist and paleobiologist,Vermeij has been fascinated with shells and plants from an early age. Dutch by birth and blind from the age of three, Vermeij moved to the United States when was he was nine. He is fully bilingual in Dutch and English and enjoys making puns in these and other languages.
